My name is Rachael Appleton, and I am an 8th-grade student at Memorial Middle School in Point Pleasant. My brother, Connor Appleton, is #66 on the Boro football team and a member of jazz band and show choir. My mom is Sharon Lasher Riddle, a teacher at the Antrim School.  I am a member of the National Junior Honor Society and I run on the Cross Country team and throw shot put and discus on the  Track teams.  I was recently selected as a member of the People to People Student Ambassador “Gateways To China” Program taking place  in July 2008. The objective of the program is to promote international understanding while building leadership skills among America’s youth. The 17-day experience includes meetings with government officials, interaction with other students my age, educational activities, and home stays with host families. I will earn 10 high school credits and up to 3 college credits. I am currently seeking financial sponsors to help me with tuition, and hope I can count on your support!

In case you haven’t heard of People to People, please allow me to share some history with you. President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded the organization in 1956. He believed that if young people from different cultures could come together in peace and friendship, so eventually would countries. Since its founding, People to People has launched many international programs, including Sister Cities and Project HOPE.

People to People Student Ambassadors are carefully interviewed and evaluated before their acceptance and I am honored to have been selected. Personally, I am looking forward to broadening my perspective of the world and gaining a better understanding of Chinese culture, history and economy. Upon my return, I plan to share my experiences with you and all my sponsors as well as my school. I will present you with a power point presentation and discussion of my journey, which will include climbing The Great Wall, seeing the majestic Terra Cotta Warriors, a meeting with officials in The Forbidden City and much more!

The program tuition is $7,299.00, which includes all transportation, accommodations, meals and educational activities. I am asking each contributor to donate $500 to help me reach my goal. I would be grateful for your contribution. Of course, any donation amount would be greatly appreciated.

Tuition installments are due each month.  I have enclosed a contribution form for your payment reference. Please feel free to contact me if you need more information. My delegate ID# is 911824. For more information, you may visit the People To People web site at www.studentambassadors.com. Your generous contribution would enable me to share in this wonderful opportunity. Thank you in advance for your consideration and support.

Thank you so much,

Rachael Appleton, Student Ambassador
